The picture from before was of “Bear Lake”
Talking about camping, running into bears can happen
I read something interesting a while back about bears
and the difference between an American mom and a Japanese mom.

A Japanese mom would hold the child and face away from the bear.

An American mom would face the bear with the child behind her.

For me, I'm the Japanese way.
What about you?

Where I live now, in Arizona, there has been a bear sighting.
The bear had come into residential area and it was big news.
For me, I don’t think I will hide. I will probably just run away.

The next morning, Scott handed me a baggy shirt and said wear this.
I wandered what we were going to do.

We were going to go camping in Logan, where Rob lived.
Logan is up north by Idaho.
Even though it was summer, the nights would be cold.
Without any say, they took me camping.

6F59CAAE-5883-4B98-A53D-CE8F7454D283

I was surprised at the bathroom at the camp site.

The toilet was a huge hole!
The hole was so big that a child could easily fall in,
even I could fall into this toilet.

I was scared that I would fall in.

3F6C97FE-5AF0-42E5-B0D0-8528EDEABA7A

This is the picture from that day, such a pretty place.
Rob’s friend from Tokyo also came camping.
3 guys and me. it was a 2 day camp.

The next morning, my suitcase arrived.
My traveler's check arrived safely too

When I woke up,
Scott's friend Rob, from Logan was already there.

8CC3739D-7876-4F00-AA43-06D8BEC0D1AE

Your suitcase is here now, lets go shooting! Scott said
what~~?? A Gun?? In Japan, only the yakuza has guns.

E992A0F0-B4C5-4B63-A84C-A1E3DE56CDD2

Try it! Scott handed me the biggest rifle.
I just held it and posed.

The rifle was so heavy that I could not hold it up for more then 10seconds.

DADE2856-994C-4506-99D6-27E7BBA6DAE4

This is a picture of Scott on that day.
(The rifle that he handed me was much larger than this one)
I thought we had to go to a special place to shoot, but we drove for a little while,
then took a side street, and started shooting in a wide open area.
America is a Gun country, and here you can easily go shooting in many places.
This was the end of my 2nd day in Utah.

One of the first things I noticed inside an American house,
In Scott’s house, there were many family pictures on the wall.
I learned later,
but It is harder to find an American house without family pictures on the wall.

73D9B47E-4D23-40F6-BBC2-8F65446602A2

Not only the walls, but other rooms had pictures as well

57661B83-C924-4A3B-A789-2753C172C162

These are the Japanese family pictures that are hung on the wall
(Usually in memory of one who has passed away)

8F3355C1-44D1-43E1-96A6-FA061F445A67

asked who all these people were.
One was Scott’s beautiful younger sister,
and
he mentioned that she was adopted. I was surprised.
In America, adopted children, generally are told that
they are adopted when they are young,

also other people also know that the children are adopted.
In Japan, adoption is usually hidden.
What other interesting things will I learn about American life.

All my stuff flew off to New York, and I couldn't do anything about it.
I cheered myself up and then we went to Scott’s house.
It was a very cute single story house, but when I went inside,
I was surprised because it had part of the house underground.

I was not used to hugs, but when I met Scott's family, they all
gave me Hugs, and I froze there not knowing what to do.

DD5DCDDC-90E3-41F3-83FF-C198320C41CC

Scott's mother prepared a very delicious meal from the night before.
I hadn't eaten very much since landing in America so I was starving.
My flight was suppose to be earlier, so the food was cold.
She said that “I will warm it up for you”
but I said immediately said that I would eat it cold.
Scott said it would taste much better warm,
but I didn't want them to do extra work.

AFA03739-8901-4D06-A5B4-47FEE9E280EE

Isn't it sad, Poor Akemi,
Before I went to Scott's house
I had not even seen or heard of a Microwave Oven.

Re-heating food is always a pain,
and it takes time; thats why I said, “No Thank you”

This Magic Box, You just put your food in it, then “Ding”, it Hot!
Wow, But it was too late.
I wanted to eat a hot meal, and I couldn't ask after I said no.

239A9EE5-D388-4F9C-A307-E3C3764D48D3

I don’t know why, maybe it was to save electricity,
but my mother always made a lot of rice at one time,
enough for a few days. We always ate cold rice,
and it was always mixed with sweet potatoes – I hated it.

I was surprised by the microwave oven, what else would be new?
Would I be able to survive in this strange land?

Even though Scott told me not to worry,
I had all my traveler's check inside my suitcase.

B63E26D6-12E7-4643-AA30-672C0922B0F5

Scott was surprised when I told him that.
Unfortunately in America,
there are times when workers will go through the suitcase
and steal belongings.
Not a lot of people will put valuables inside suitcases.
Its doesn’t happen in Japan, so I had put all my money inside.
Tuition, dorm rent and all my money was in New York.
All I had with me was about $200 in cash

Scott said worrying won't do anything so cheer up.
“I wanted to surprise you…look!” He said and showed me…

he came in a classic 40’s car to pick me up.
It looked so cool.
It was my first look at a classic car.
I wanted to sit on the drivers side, but when I sat down
I couldn’t see anything, or even reach the pedals.
The pedals were also cool,
they were in a shape of a foot print.
I had cash with me,
and the traveler’s check would come back with the check number.
Being sad won’t do anything,
Scott took me on some sigh seeing places on the way to his house

2D2253E1-E440-46D8-92F2-60B6AA75FADC

I arrived safely in Salt Lake
and headed to baggage claim where I was going to meet my friend.
My friend had followed me from the gate all the way to baggage claim laughing at me.
Before the 9-11 attack, anyone could walk into the gate area of airports.

371A19A0-10E6-41DF-B29F-02A81F127A90

While we were waiting for our suitcase,
the conversation changed to the lady that helped me with the phone.
I asked why she started to laugh all the sudden.

11B3C6F8-9ABC-4F7B-98BA-B3147B2DE354

My friend Scott started to laugh.

48AE783B-9BF9-4DFF-B1E4-EF411192AF99

The blue eyed lady watched me all the way from Seoul,
and she thought I was
a elementary school child traveling alone.

She was worried about me, because of the Typhoon, and traveling to another country.
We were both going to America, and she couldn't stop thinking about me.
Then she saw me the next day, at the Delta counter, and saw that I needed help
and asked to help when I tried to call my friend.

As she was talking to my friend Scott,
she said that she was also going to Salt Lake,

and in fact she even lived close to my friend.
These strange happenings are nice to have in life, and I was impressed.
She learned that I was an adult, going to study abroad, and they both laughed.

I was shocked that someone thought I was an elementary school student.
We were planning on going straight to my friend Scott’s house, but
a big shock was waiting for me.
More problems and bad happenings?
